Performing Ed Rusha's "Every Building on the Sunset Strip"

Ed Ruscha’s Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966) is a 25-foot long accordion-fold book in which he took a photo of every building on the Sunset Strip and stitched them together. I wondered what this piece looked like as a performance in 2012. Using Ruscha’s book as my score, I performed “Every Building on the Sunset Strip” using Google Street View. The choice to show video of myself next to the Street View capture was made so each could be seen as a character in a story, equally relevant when exploring the narrative.

This piece was included in Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative, an exhibition at Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 2013.
